You feel nervous. You can’t shake a pervasive feeling of impending doom. As such, your heart races, you start to sweat and feel weak, you are in the grips of anxiety. And you’re not alone. There are 40 million adults in the United States who are affected by anxiety disorders every year. But, there is good news. Anxiety is highly treatable. In this article, we’ll touch on using CBD for anxiety.
Read on to discover what CBD is, how it works, and most importantly, how to use it.
WHAT IS CBD?
Cannabidiol, CBD, is one of many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. However, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t cause intoxication.
CBD has recently risen to fame touted as something of a ‘cure-all.’ Anecdotal evidence and scientific studies suggest CBD could help address several common ailments.
Early research shows CBD could help treat:
- anxiety issues
- arthritis
- insomnia
- chronic inflammation
Although more research is needed, Americans seem to be finding relief through CBD. A 2019 Gallup poll found that 14% of Americans use CBD regularly. Among study participants, the top uses for CBD were:
- 40% use CBD for pain relief
- 20% use CBD for anxiety
- 11% use CBD for insomnia
- 8% use CBD for arthritis
HOW CBD WORKS
The exact way CBD works within the human body isn’t entirely understood yet.
To date, scientists think that CBD interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors in your body. They are part of your endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system exists in all of us, whether or not we use cannabis.
The ECS plays a role in many bodily functions. Some of which include:
- hormonal regulation
- metabolism
- immune response
- reproductive function
- cardiovascular function
- sleep
- learning, memory, and motor control
It’s generally thought that CBD alters serotonin signals in the brain.
THE STATE OF MENTAL HEALTH
Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, mental health outlooks for adults were grim.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 Americans has a diagnosable mental health condition. Half of all Americans will meet the criteria for such a condition at some point in their lives; half of those people will experience it by age 14.
Poor mental health isn’t just an American issue. Over 792 million people worldwide are suffering from anxiety in varying degrees.
A 2017 survey found that 41% of cannabis users found CBD highly-effective in addressing their anxiety issues.
CBD FOR MENTAL HEALTH
The cost of mental health care can be prohibitive for many. For example, cognitive-behavioral therapies can cost $100-$120, or more, per hour.
CBD products are often far more affordable and easily accessible. They offer a way for people with limited financial resources to find relief.
CBD FOR ANXIETY
A recent study published in Permanente Journal showed some stunning results.
In the study 79% of participants experienced a noticeable reduction in their anxiety symptoms after using CBD.
In another study, people with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) also found significant relief through CBD.
Those who received a 400mg dose of CBD experienced a total reduction in anxiety symptoms.
A 2015 review indicated high success levels using CBD for a wide variety of anxiety related issues.
CBD FOR DEPRESSION
Anxiety and depression often go hand in hand. So it makes sense that people with both conditions are reaching for CBD and finding relief.
Many experts think that CBD’s is effective because of how it interacts with the ECS.
Depression is linked to low serotonin levels. Now, CBD alone doesn’t boost those levels. However, it does affect how your brain responds to existing serotonin.
If you currently take antidepressants, consult your physician before making any changes.
A good rule of thumb in general is, if you are currently taking any prescription medications always consult your physician before m
HOW TO TAKE CBD
CBD is straightforward to take. It comes in a wide range of forms that will suit just about every palate.
Some of the methods of ingestion include:
- CBD oil or tinctures
- CBD sublingual spray
- CBD capsules
- CBD vape oil
- Select strains of cannabis flower
- CBD lotions
The method of ingestion will determine how quickly you feel effects. For example, smoking or vaping CBD, you can expect to feel results immediately. In contrast, if you eat or drink CBD, it can take 30min to 2 hours to kick in.
Today, CBD is widely available. You can find it in many convenience stores, drug stores, and countless specialty shops online.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CBD
Authors of a 2019 review of CBD found most people tolerate doses as high as 1500mg quite well.
There is limited data available on the effects of long-term CBD use.
Some possible side-effects include:
- drowsiness
- changes in appetite
- diarrhea
- weight fluctuations
It’s also worth noting that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate CBD. Use your best judgment when purchasing CBD products. As you would with any medication, do your research first.
